Larry Bellamy is a Vietnam vet, a photographer, and retired professional that enjoys being active in the community. While serving as a Deacon at Gethsemane Baptist Church in High Point and as a mentor with BOTSO (Brothers Organized To Save Others) he still found time to join Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont. It was after church service in August of 2019 that Site Base Director, Patrick Medley, Sr., struck up a conversation with Larry regarding his “sharp” attire. The conversation led to a mutual affinity for travel, reading, and Human service. Not long after Larry was introduced to the idea of becoming a mentor in the new 8 to Great program where 8th graders from Johnson St. Global Studies were to matched with community members in a one-to-one mentoring program. Patrick eventually matched Larry with Abel Davis. Abel and Larry have spent countless hours discussing career goals, work ethic, education, family values, and so much more. Abel has been instrumental in helping Larry grow his computer skills to match his “dynamic” dress attire. Abel is an older brother who exhibits very caring mannerisms. One thing that will always stick out in Patrick’s mind is the time when Abel offered to help pay for pizza after a field trip with his money. Selflisness, hard work, and mentoring will prove to pay dividends in the lives of all involved in this match. Salute to both individuals and their families.
