Congratulations to our 2016 Big of the Year!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont announced their “Big of the Year” award at the annual Caring for Kids fundraising event, “The BIG Magic Gala: Over the Rainbow,” at Embassy Suites in Greensboro on Saturday, January 28th, 2017.  Tess Paratory was named the “Big of the Year” based on a nomination from her Match Support Specialist, Marie Hopper and her Little Sister’s father.

Every once in a while two people meet and it is like they were meant to be part of one another’s lives.  There is a mutual respect and admiration that occurs, as well as a desire to help elevate one another.  That is the exact situation with this year’s Big of the Year […]

At the luncheon Little of the Year was presented to Christopher. Big Brother Paul presented Chris with the award. Paul shared stories about what the match […]

October Match Maker

Israel’s quick smile lights up a room.  However, last year his Big Sister, Allison, didn’t see that smile very much.  She was, at times, discouraged and wondered if she was making a difference in Israel’s life.  There were times when he wouldn’t talk to her much and would almost ignore her.  Through coaching and encouragement, Allison began to teach Israel that she is in it for the long haul.  Israel became more responsive and began to talk more.  When he ran to her and hugged her as she entered the classroom, Allison knew she had made a break-through with him.  Now they laugh and giggle all the time as she helps him in class.    Allison was especially […]

September Match Maker

Samantha became a Big Sister in November 2013. She was matched in the site-based program and was a great mentor to her Little Brother Quran throughout three semesters. Even though her Little Brother did not continue with program at The Boys and Girls Club, Sam still wanted to be involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters and was re-matched with her new Little Sister; Willow.

Samantha and her Little Sister Willow have been matched since October 2015 in the Site-Based program.  Sam’s Little Sister is a nice, semi-quiet child who told Match Support Specialist Adriana that she wanted someone to help her with school and have someone older to talk to.  Sam has made it her mission to support […]

Summer Match Maker

Hunter and Jania have been matched together since November 2014, during Jania’s first year at Welborn Middle School. Prior to their match date, Little Sister, Jania had been matched with another High Point University Big Sister for four years , until her previous Big graduated. After her previous matched closed, Jania told MSS, Teresa Jackson that she wanted to be rematched at Welborn with another Big Sister from HPU.  Teresa had just finished enrollment on a HPU Women’s basketball player with a smile just as big and bright as Jania’s, who had requested a Little in middle […]

June Match Maker

Jamario and Alex were matched in our community based program since October 2015 and they have been growing their friendship every month since.  Jamario is an eleven year old who was in need of a positive male role model as his dad was killed when he was only two. His mom believed having a Big Brother would benefit Jamario.

Alex was motivated to become a Big Brother because he wanted to make a positive difference in the life of another child. Alex has provided Jamario with advice about school and how to get along well with others. He encourages him to do the right thing all the time and to think positive about life.

When they are together, Jamario […]

April Match Maker

Lauren and Marybeth have been matched since October 2012.  Lauren is a High Point University student who wanted to help others and spend some time outside of her college bubble.  Marybeth needed help initially with reading but her needs have changed throughout the years.  She is now a “tween” and Lauren has learned how to deal with all that comes with that age.  Lauren has been a constant and steady influence in Marybeth’s life.  Sometimes we overlook the volunteers whose impact is most profoundly felt as a result of them “just being there”.  You can’t change a child’s life, tell them how much they matter, or influence their decisions unless you show up.  Lauren has been “showing […]

March Match Maker

“I first met Jasmine Williams in the fall of 2012.  I was excited to have her as a Big because she had extensive experience with children- she had been a camp counselor at the Y, a lifeguard, and her family had a daycare.  Her references said wonderful things about her willingness to take on extra assignments and how the kids all loved her.  Most importantly to me, she checked the box “Willing to work with a child of the opposite sex”.  I had, and continue to have, a huge number of boys and very few males to match them with.  I remember feeling very comfortable with her willingness to be matched with a boy- she wasn’t just […]

Genesis and Maggie have been matched in our Site Based program since November 2014 and they have been growing their friendship every week since. Maggie visits Genesis at Oakview Elementary. When they are together, Genesis and Maggie always have a good time. Some of the activities they enjoy doing together are eating lunch together, playing board games, drawing, coloring and talking. Genesis stated with a big smile, “My Big sister Maggie has helped me improve my grades. I used to make C’s and D’s and now I am making A’s and B’s. I enjoy her friendship and she always makes me feel better, she is always encouraging and she is fun.”

Maggie was motivated to become a Big […]
